I like doing still life photography when it isn’t so nice outside. This morning was actually beautiful outside, but I got sidetracked.
The reason I was sidetracked was that this photography website (www.dpreview.com) I visit often is doing a photo contest that ends today, and the theme of the photo contest is ‘Eggs’. I have had this shot that I’ve wanted to take for months, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. The main reason I haven’t done it yet is that we always have brown eggs (never white) and this shot required white eggs. So I woke up this morning, got some coffee and rushed off to Walmart to get 6 pack of white eggs.
Learning Photography from others:
I believe in mimicking images I’ve seen from other photographers. This image is a replication of one I’ve seen before. I’m not trying to steal the idea, but when I see a great picture (one I think is great), then I want to see if I can replicate it. I feel this is the best way to improve my skills by understanding what it takes to create a certain image. It helps me take better photographs. Today was the day because this contest pushed me.
If you wonder why I was attracted to this image… I love the subtlety. I think I love it because of the ‘rule of odds’ which says that an odd number of items is more interesting than an even number of objects. Three seems to be the magic number. I love that you may not know these are eggs right off the bat. I also like to have still life ideas to work on when I don’t want to go outside. I’m not sure if the people who vote in this contest will appreciate it, but you can find out here at https://www.dpreview.com/challenges/Challenge.aspx?ID=13105 when the voting is done, or you can vote for me if you like 🙂
